Oprah Takes Her Meetings Walking — Science Says She's On to Something Big

For years she's swapped conference rooms for garden paths. Researchers who study 'moving meetings' say the benefits are measurable — and copying her costs nothing.

Oprah Winfrey’s garden walks are documented across decades of interviews — business conversations, interviews, even difficult talks taken on foot, on purpose. It’s one of her oldest habits, and one of the few celebrity wellness practices with actual controlled studies behind it.

Researchers call them moving meetings. The data is surprisingly strong.

What walking does to talking

The most-cited finding: walking boosts creative output substantially compared to sitting, and the effect persists even after you stop. But meeting facilitators point to a subtler benefit — posture. Side-by-side conversation, without sustained eye contact, lowers defensiveness. Difficult topics get easier when you’re both facing forward.

“Some of the hardest conversations in organizations happen best on foot,” one executive coach told us. “The body moves, the mind follows.”

Converting one meeting a week

The entry protocol: pick one recurring 1:1, take it outside, no agenda beyond three points. Thirty minutes of walking meeting is roughly 3,000 steps you didn’t have to find time for.

Walking meetings fixed my 1:1s. Something about not making eye contact makes people actually talk.

The creativity study is real — I draft difficult emails in my head on walks now. Works embarrassingly well.
