Jessica Alba Cleans Out One Cabinet at a Time — and Her Method Actually Works
The Honest founder's approach to clean beauty isn't a purge. It's a slow swap with a rule attached, and dermatologists say it's the only version that sticks.

Jessica Alba has spent a decade arguing for cleaner ingredients — but her personal method, described across interviews, is notably un-dramatic. No bathroom purge, no bonfire of half-used bottles. One cabinet at a time, one swap at a time.
The rule: when something runs out, replace it with a cleaner version. Never before.
Why the slow swap beats the purge
Dermatologists see the purge fail constantly. Throw out everything at once and two things happen: skin reacts to a dozen new products simultaneously, and the financial pain creates resentment that ends the experiment by month two.
The slow swap inverts both problems. One new product at a time means reactions are traceable. Replacements only at empty means zero waste. “Start with what touches your skin longest and most often,” one dermatologist told us. “Cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen. The rest is decoration.”

The first swap to make
If you start anywhere, start with cleanser — twice daily, every day, on wet skin. It’s the highest-frequency contact in your routine and the place where a short ingredient list matters most.
We tested the category all spring. The bottle that earned the sink spot is below.

A short-ingredient-list cleanser that removed sunscreen in our tests without stripping. The swap we'd start with.

Did the one-cabinet method this spring. Six months later everything I own is short-list. Zero waste.
The cleanser-first logic is right — it's the thing that touches your face twice a day.
My wife did the purge version in 2021. Half the 'clean' products got thrown out too. Slow swap wins.
Alba's been on this for a decade, credit where due. The method is genuinely sane.
