The glazed-donut skin Hailey Bieber made famous looks, in photos, like a single miraculous cream. Her own brand’s messaging has always hinted otherwise, and people who work on her skin say it plainly: the shine is the last step, not the first.
“Everyone asks what’s on top,” says one makeup artist who has prepped her for shoots. “The answer is whatever’s underneath, done properly.”
The layering rule
The method is a sequence, not a product: hydrate on damp skin, in thin layers, waiting thirty seconds between each. Mist or essence first — while the skin is still wet from cleansing — then a serum, then a cream, and only then the glossy finish that photographs like glass.
Each layer seals the one before it. Applied to dry skin, the same products pill, sit, or evaporate. Applied in the damp-skin sequence, even modest formulas perform like luxury ones. “It’s free,” our source says. “That’s why nobody sells it.”
